Sterling Silver Flatware - use and care
Sterling silver is a choice material that
boasts unique qualities, and sterling flatware is one of the
few products made whose appearance actually improves with
use. In fact, daily use is encouraged as an integral
part of silver care. The tiny scratches formed by
years of use will warm and mellow the surface, resulting in
a beautifully lustrous finish or "patina".
After each use, wash or at least rinse
sterling promptly. Foods like eggs, mayonnaise,
vinegar, salt, fruits and vegetables contain minerals and
acids that can cause loss of color. Wash in hot water
with a mild detergent, then rinse immediately in hot water
and dry thoroughly with a soft cloth. Extended
immersion in water can permanently damage the metal - do not
leave sterling silver soaking.
Washing sterling in the dishwasher is also
acceptable. Rinse thoroughly first, and use only the
amount of detergent recommended by the machine's
manufacturer. In areas with hard water, avoid spotting
by removing silver before the drying cycle begins and
hand-dry with a soft cloth.
Polish you silver once or twice a year,
whether it has been used regularly or not.
When storing, make sure sterling flatware is
completely dry. Store away from open air, in a chest
or drawer lined with special tarnish-preventing cloth.
Do not use rubber bands and do not wrap in plastic,
newspaper or any high sulfur wrapping.
